In Photos: Street Scenes-Mexico City

Away from the beaches and tropical heavens, our second trip to Mexico was to the epicenter of history and culture, Mexico City itself. We got a fair bit of warning when we said we are headed to Mexico City. From "It's not safe" to the extent "It's dangerous". However from the moment we landed we only encountered warm, friendly people who despite the language barrier (Tip: Brush up on key phrases or get away using Google Translate) were eager to share their culture and help with things we were trying to navigate. In any city, there are neighborhoods that are great and ones that need to be avoided (It's Tepito for CDMX!).

We had one full week in Mexico City, which meant plenty of time to immerse ourselves with a hustle of touristy attractions as well as walk the many streets and quiet by lanes in some of the neighborhoods, experiencing the variety of everyday life in Mexico City.

Common themes as we explored neighborhoods, were a rich mix of European and modern Mexican architecture, bold colors, some of the most beautiful doors and food stalls galore!

Above: Aztec dancers performing on the street. With majestic headdress and makeup they sure make a good photo opp.

Corn or Crickets?

As vegetarians the choice was easy!

Below Mariachis at Garibaldi Square...While heading back to the airport we passed this place again at about 6 AM and were surprised to find them there even then!

A dog walker in Polanco and Kiosko Morisco , a Moorish gazebo (above), a great space for people watching, especially when there is a group of locals grooving to salsa! Walking distant from the gazebo is the Biblioteca Vasconcelos, a public library. A must visit for the mere size, architecture and contemporary interiors.

Below, graffities in quiet lanes of Mexico City...

Mix of modern and traditional architecture.

Someone said, "It's not about the destination, it's the journey that counts." As cliched as it may sound, the true travel immersion is only experienced when you get lost in the city and discover some hidden gems that otherwise would have been missed!
